Despite agreeing with your latest article on wsj, I would like to tell you that I am really amazed by the hypocrisy of American government and intelligentsia regarding Turkish politics.

It has been this very same islamist/fascist government prosecuting secular Turkish intellectuals on political grounds since 2007, with full support from US and EU governments, press, business elite and academicians. Amazingly, they had to clash with Israel in order to receive some criticism from you people, at last.

Sorry, but honestly most Turkish intellectuals including me are quite disgusted by the western attitude towards Turkey, which finds a fine example in your latest article. In the same article you are somewhat critising your past attitude as well as the past attitude of the US. However, I really wonder what would be the headlines in the US press as well as the attitude of the columnists if Erdoğan made a surprise move in order to restore relations with Israel. Sadly, but obviously you people would revert back ignoring Erdoğan's fascist domestic policies.

Please be honest to yourself if you want to be taken more seriously.

Hmm. From a slightly different point of view, it is very much the same old country. I'll do a point by point leaving out the stuff about your father-in-law and the parts I agree with:

** "It wasn't so long ago that the country seemed to be taking significant strides in the direction of human rights and democracy."

This, if it actually did happen to the extent it was advertised, indeed would have made the country unrecognizable to anyone who grew up there. It also would have been magical.

** "But more recently, the same government has been responsible for a politics of deception, dirty tricks, fear, and intimidation that couldn't present a sharper contrast to its rhetoric on democracy."

No doubt this is recognizable and fully in-line with what we are used to both from politicians and the system itself.

** "Several Turkish intellectuals abroad who have expressed critical views have told me they are afraid to return to Turkey."

I have no doubt you are told this, but why is this significant? Is it unusual for Turkey? Starting with the 19th century, Turkish intellectuals living in freer societies in the West have always feared this. Those living in Turkey also feared being unable to leave Turkey. I don't believe this problem has gotten worse in recent years, but a somewhat different bunch seems to be getting targeted now.

** "Inexplicably, many supposed Turkish democrats and liberals have made common cause with the AKP government and have acted as cheerleaders for these cases."

It is not inexplicable, since, as you say:

** "Their hope seems to be that the Ergenekon trials will bring the so-called "deep state"—clandestine networks of the military and their civilian allies—to account."

So that is an explanation. Or, it would have been, if they didn't fail in ways you also outline. But that can also be explained (see below).

** "There is little doubt that Turkey's pre-AKP secular order featured strong anti-democratic undercurrents."

"Undercurrents?" No, I don't believe it was merely "undercurrents." When we talk of democratization and liberalization, we are not talking about getting rid of undercurrents but a huge transformation.

** "But the AKP government has shown little interest in uncovering actual crimes or bringing real culprits to justice."

This is true and in this regard they resemble all the other governments we've had.

** "Moreover, in these and other cases the government engages in exactly the kinds of activities that the liberals decry and want to bring to justice."

Please note that you are bad-mouthing 'liberals' on the WSJ.

The word 'liberal' does not mean the same thing on this side of the Atlantic. It also isn't clear what it means in Turkey, in particular. Much like our 'democrats' (and indeed 'communists') I don't believe many of our 'liberals' are seeking anything resembling liberalism (in any sense). In fact, I don't think many of them even understand what they are talking about. You can see this in their disinformation about the economy where they seem to think privatization=free markets; in the displays of gutlessness about freedom of speech where they failed to explain to the people what the principled position would be about 'insults' or cartoons; in their utter silence about internet censorship as it descended on the Turkish part of the network in the past three years and so on.

So the liberals' failure isn't limited to failing to understand, explain and support due process. This failure is like the way it was with the purported holders of any ideology in the country where we grew up. Of course the sycophantic relationship some 'liberals' have with the AKP doesn't help things. This cannot be helped until the audience of their intellectual output holds them to a higher level of integrity. Need I point out that that particular aspect of the problem isn't new either?

** "Consider some other examples. Despite considerable evidence that senior members of the police were, at a minimum, guilty of gross negligence in the murder of the Armenian journalist Hrant Dink in January 2007, none of the policemen have been prosecuted."

Again, this is what we'd expect in the country we grew up in. No? I don't know if you got a chance to follow it, but the families of such murder victims got together recently. Starting with the murder of Sabahattin Ali (1948) we seem to have about 30 such murders about which the state behaved in exactly this way.

** "It is not a coincidence that some of these same police officials have led the Ergenekon investigations."

In what way is this new? The same state apparatus that is used to investigate and prosecute the 'undesirable' elements is itself beyond the reach of law as usual. One novelty this time around is that we can actually talk about it more. Oh, and, that the undesirables this time around were thought to have been untouchable until recetntly. So the behaviour of the government is not new, the targets have changed and there's some room for public scrutiny and vocal criticism.

** "Given the trail of wrongdoings the AKP is leaving behind, it will likely do whatever it takes to avoid losing power in next summer's elections."

Once again, how's the latter part objectionable? Or, for that matter, how is the former part novel?

** "Sadly, Mr. Erdogan's inclination will be to raise the temperature a few notches higher, both domestically and internationally (see its recent rapprochement with Iran, or its brinkmanship against its old friend Israel)."

If you take Israel to be the new Greece for Turkish governments, this simply fits into the pattern we're used to.

** "It's clear now that Turkey is no longer the liberalizing, emerging democracy under the AKP that it was only a few years ago."

It is not clear at all. If the expectation was that it'd take a few years and we'd end up with something resembling a modern liberal democracy, that expectation was foolish. We knew all this pre-AKP, suspected this about them and we are merely getting confirmation now that AKP itself is not a miraculous collection of angels backed by a sophisticated, knowledgeable intellectual class with some integrity. The liberalization and democratization will take time, but I don't think the process is reversible barring natural or political disasters (war, coups).

I don't expect you or anyone to support the AKP -- I don't. I think the somewhat uncritical support they received previously didn't help them or Turkey. On the other hand swinging to the other extreme or advocacy thereof is hardly appropriate. What's happening to retired generals now, could have happened (and probably did) to many others here even during the time AKP was getting much support from abroad. The point where we -- or any liberal democracy -- want to be is one where any citizen can feel his liberty protected and be treated equally by the law. The yardstick with which to measure how close we are to that ideal is hardly the case of a bunch of retired generals. The indifference of the powerful (military or civilian) classes especially after 1980 to how the judiciary and law enforcement worked here deafened even the educated parts of the populace to arguments about the arbitrary use of power and authority. Now that the shoe is on the other foot, the lesson isn't that we or the foreigners should turn anti-AKP, but the need to make sure the people of Turkey begin to understand the promise of liberal democracy and rule of law for all.

I, for one, am not more fearful of arbitrary use of gov't power here than I used to be. Quite on the contrary, in fact, now we can talk about various you-know-whos w/o looking around to see who might hear. It isn't quite freedom and justice for all, for sure, but it is slightly more freedom and the same old injustice for all including the formerly untouchables. Finite progress, I'd say. There's much to fear yet, but it isn't as bad as you make it out to be. (Of course, um, 'the fire burns where it touches.' On that you and your family have my sympathies.)

Just marking things with '**' isn't quite the same as using a different typeface, and it does make things harder to read. Having typed all that before I noticed mark-up and the usual quoting style would not work, I was too lazy to rephrase what you have said and produce a more readable essay. My apologies.)

I agree with you when you say "the lesson isn't that we or the foreigners should turn anti-AKP, but the need to make sure the people of Turkey begin to understand the promise of liberal democracy and rule of law for all." But it is the AKP that is in power right now, and which is acting in total disregard of the rule of law and human rights, and so I think it is entirely appropriate to point the finger of blame at them.

Are we better off now than we were in the recent past? Turkey obviously has a long history of repression and abuse of power, but I cannot think of a single democratically elected government since the 1950s that has been involved in the fabrication of evidence and the framing of its opponents at this scale and with such brazenness. In this respect, the case against Ilhan Cihaner, for example, truly has no precedent.

What single evidence do you have to argue that the current government is involved in the fabrication of evidence?

By the way, I see that you have been endorsed/applauded by Ertugrul Ozkok. Congrats and I hope that it gives the readers a clue about where you stand politically.

For those who are unfamiliar with Turkey, a brief intro for Ozkok: He is the editor of the ultra-nationalist daily newspaper Hurriyet. The motto of the paper is "Turkey belongs to the Turks" and its owner publicly stated that the paper actually "belonged" to the "state" (in the Turkish case, read as the military establishment). The paper has been used and manipulated by the military for propaganda purposes at least since the Istanbul Pogrom of 1955. More recently, the paper used fabricated evidence supplied by the military to attack journalists critical of the military establishment during the 28 February coup. Among the victims of the propaganda of the paper are the Kurdish intellectual Ahmet Kaya (forced to leave Turkey due to threats and died abroad), Turkish Nobel laureate Orhan Pamuk (forced to leave Turkey due to threats), and Turkish-Armenian intellectual Hrant Dink (assasinated. Later Ozkok wrote that the public had to "understand" and "show empathy" for the murderer). Here is [part of] what Orhan Pamuk says about the Ergenekon case:"A country where retired military officers, the mafia and gangs kill people and threaten them to keep silent would not be a moral country. I would have to say that protecting Ergenekon members and murderers is not moral at all".

I have skimmed it and and having some familiarity with the obscurantist style of some of the authors did some simple text searches within the document. Here's something typical of that style (p. 62):

"It is no longer a secret that Erhan Tuncel -- a close friend of hit man Ogun Samast, the alleged killer of Hrant Dink -- was an intelligence agent who tipped the Trabzon and Istanbul police off about a planned assassination against journalist Dink. Ali Oz, who was then gendarmerie regiment commander in Trabzon, however, ignored the tips. Istanbul police neglected to take action against the prior notice about the planned murder. [...]" (I had to get rid of Turkish letters)

Note the how the names of the police officers are hidden and somehow the named gendarmerie officer is implicated. Now, somebody might turn around, name the police personnel and their superiors (AKP-appointed, mind you), indicate their roles in parts of the Ergenekon investigation/prosecution itself and make a far more valid (and scary) counterpoint. I won't be the person to do this, what I will say is that there is intense propaganda coming from both sides targeting English-speakers and 'truth' isn't the only thing that's hurt by these efforts.

One end result of the production of such propaganda is the intellectual corruption of the people involved. My point is that we as a nation need the people who are employed in this effort to genuinely understand and explain the high-sounding concepts they refer to. In getting them to make their living in the present manner and through helping them rise to prominence by employing such obvious cheap tricks in their prose, much harm is being done to this nation. Much like the way the supposed purveyors of enlightenment ideals failed -- in part -- in adopting them both themselves and in the institutions they founded, the memebers pf the present 'liberal democrat' bunch are warping their own brains and the thought processes of those they influence.

As commenter MK indicated above, the foreign influence in all this, if it will be useful to this nation at all, will need to take place at the level of principle and not details such as support of particular parties or particular suspects. We can also certainly use college professors (of any nationality) who'll grab a piece of prose such as the one above to treat it as a term paper they are grading and point out the non-sequiturs, use of obscurantist language or style, appeals to confirmation bias etc. Do I see any takers? (I am half kidding, of course. For the other half, let me just say I'm a techie and I'm not a college prof anyway so don't look at me.)

In the broader sense, that kind of nurture of clarity of thought and establishment of a genuine sense of intellectual integrity is what's truly needed. Otherwise, I fear that power will just shift back and forth and we'll see well-meaning folks in our intelligentsia providing propaganda support to various sides and causing further self-perpetuating kind of damage not just through the content of what they say but through the legitimization of a particular style of argument.
