The French newspaper Le Monde ran a lengthy article on our MPAID program in its education supplement. Frankly I wasn't quite sure how this one would come out since the journalist who wrote it (and who attended some classes including mine) seemed quite skeptical about what we were doing. But in the end we seemed to have overcome his suspicions. (I am referred to as "le president du MPA-ID, Dani Rodrik." That sort of has a nice ring to it...)
The article contains interviews with our students and vignettes on what our graduates are doing currently. It is in French, but you can read it here: Download le_monde_de_leducation_article_harvard.pdf
Dani, thank you for sharing this very interesting supplement from Le Monde. I am French and American (econ undergrad studying in Canada), so reading about development economics and public policy in French will be nice for a change. I never cease to be impressed by the quality and open-mindedness of your blog, and enjoy reading it -- and the links -- tremendously. Keep up the excellent work!

Le Monde De L'Education is not exactly a supplement of Le Monde, but rather an education-centered monthly published by the same publishing group...

Speaking of the 'French' view of development economics, a French blog discussed a paper by Nicolas Meisel (Agence Française de Développement) et Jacques Ould-Aoudia (DGTPE, Minefe) on the topic "la 'bonne gouvernance' est-elle une bonne stratégie de développement ?". I have the impression that they may have paid too little attention to pragmatist/constructivist work (like yours). Maybe this article in Le Monde will help "for next time."

Dear Dani:
Since it seems you are in a French reading phase :), it would be nice if you could read this interesting article appeared in Le Monde website ( ""L'Afrique est ruinée ? La Chine est preneuse" http://www.lemonde.fr/web/imprimer_element/0,[email protected],50-1046856,0.html). It reviews a new book about the Chinese business "invasion" in Africa, a topic you have mentioned in this blog.

Enfin ! On peut écrire en français, ici ! Quelle bonne nouvelle !...
je lis avec beaucoup d'intérêt votre blog depuis longtemps, et je dois dire que comparé aux blogs d'économistes distingués, c'est le SEUL sur lequel j'ai lu cette réponse inhabituelle "Answer is : I wish I knew".
Superbe.

The web of losses that you describe in NC are offset by a web of gains in Boston. Restrict trade, and I pay more for my socks, do not eat dinner in Boston, and the web of losses you described in NC happens in Boston http://www.ewcss.com

Many places and centers offer business and trade promotions to both buyers and supplier. What about the differences in skill intensities across industries? The job losses in the relatively unskilled-labor intensive battery industry should have little effect on the relatively skilled-labor intensive machinery
